Tip
If you make an appointment with a college … Keep it. If you can’t make it … Call to reschedule or cancel. Not showing up is rude.

College Search Tip #1
Don’t rule out a school because your parents think the school is in a “bad area”. Many perceptions of cities are wrong … Or at least off. Schedule a campus tour and check it out. You may be sacrificing a great opportunity because of a few old buildings and 80 years of negative stigma.

Don't Take Bad Advice
The title of this post may seem pretty obvious … But over the past few weeks while reading applications I have stumbled upon (and have been reminded of) a few pieces of terrible advice many students are getting during their application process.  I am going to address two of them here in hopes that this post will be shared, and these bad ideas stop spreading. 1) Apply to the major you want. ...

A friendly tip for students starting their college...
Don’t let the first question you ask about a college be anything relating to requesting a fee waiver for your application when interacting with a college representative.  Many counselors either … Do not have the authority to waive application fees. Will waive it for you if you seem like a strong applicant who they would like to see apply. It’s OK to seek out fee waivers. ...

How to keep your kid out of college (for parents)
It is no secret that parents are an important part of the college search and selection process.  In fact, many studies are out there that show that aside from Guidance Counselors and their friends, parents are one of the top resources that students look to for guidance and support during their college search. Over the past few years we in the admissions world have seen the role of the parent...

Advice for parents
Do not start an application for your child. When we find out, it shows us that they are not self-starters. College applications are a good time to push your son/daughter to make important life choices. If they do not apply, maybe collegeis not for them. That is all for today!

Your College Search
Welcome to the new location of my University of New Haven Blog!  I must say I am very happy with the switch, as these blogs will be a lot more interactive and easier to share. In my opinion, a big part of the college search is not only seeking out information, but also sharing information you find with others.  The best way to learn is through teaching … so when you find some useful...
